INDIAN WOMEN’S IDENTITY AND LIFE IN USA, A CASE STUDY OF BOSTON

Abstract

Every person is somewhat attached to his or her culture irrespective of the place they live. Few people tend to adopt and accept foreign culture whereas it is difficult for some of them. When it comes to Indians, I found that they belong to the latter category. This was ascertained by the interviews I had conducted with Indians living in Boston, USA. I have observed that Indians have made efforts in following Indian culture without breaking American laws. Indians try to adjust to American lifestyle but still give importance to Indian family values, festivals and cultural values. I have observed that Indian who comes to US follow a common pattern and lifestyle irrespective of his or her financial state in India. As they stay more in this country, they attain different visa status and slowly get permanent residency and citizenship later on. Apart from their visa status, their status in society also changes. They buy their own house. In most cases both husband and wife start earning. Along with these changes, their attitude towards new Indians coming from India also undergoes changes. Some people keep helping nature towards new Indians whereas few people ignore them by staying in people or society of same status. Indian women also undergo changes as they are exposed to a new or different culture and this changes their identity altogether. Traditionally a shy, conservative, subdued Indian woman turns into a bold, brave, professional, aggressive woman ready to face challenges in western world. In spite of all these behavioral changes, every Indian tries to preserve Indian culture and tries to pass on family values and cultural values to next generation. This is done by mixing in other Indians around their place of living, attending parties arranges by Indians, attending events organized by community organizations, attending Indian cultural programs. They also celebrate Indian festivals without breaking any local laws and limitations. These activities are aimed at spreading awareness of Indian culture into their next generation and a hope that they will also respect and abide by the rules and boundaries imposed by the Indian culture. The reality is that Indian kids often find themselves in the company of their friends at school and day care centers where majority of kids are Americans. Their company influences their behavior a lot and at some point because of the conflict between two cultures their neither fully understand Indian culture nor totally adapt to American culture. Indian parents sensing this dilemma often make more efforts to make their kids aware of Indian culture by talking in native language with them. However kids often talk in hybrid language which is mix of their mother tongue and English. They are also made to talk with their grandparents. However they find this a boring exercise and prefer to be alone, all by themselves or be in the company of friends of their age group. Clothes are another topic of conflict where Indian parent allow some liberty but still imposing certain rules especially in case of female kids. Food also adds to the conflict as food habits of Indian and American are 180 degrees apart. Majority of cases it happens that next generation remains in confused state with respect to culture and looking at this scenario I strongly feel that succeeding generations of Indian origin will become Americanized.
